This event constitutes a “natural geological disaster” which occurred “under the impact of persistent heavy rains” explains the public broadcaster CCTV. 500 people were sent to the scene to help with the rescue efforts.

Indeed, torrential rains have fallen in recent weeks in Guangdong province. Significant flooding and landslides are to be deplored. In recent days, the rains have been surprisingly much heavier than usual, just before the monsoon season. Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the authorities to "double down on rescue operations on site and the treatment of the injured", CCTV reported this Thursday.
