Coronavirus in Europe : 20 000 new cases per day, WHO pulls the alarm

the european branch of The world health Organization (WHO) expressed its "concern" on Friday for the resurgence of the Covid-19 in some countries of Europe, calling on them to remain responsive and to lift the restrictions "with caution" or to reintroduce them if needed. WHO Europe, asked for an update on the situation on the Old Continent, has not explicitly listed the countries that raised the concern, but has returned to its array of on-line monitoring.

With 335 new cases per 100 000 population, Kyrgyzstan is, compared to its population, the first country of the vast area of WHO Europe with a trend rising very sharply, according to the ranking of the countries of the region by new cases during the last 14 days.

In countries with significant number of new cases and an increase of the latter, following Israel (256 new cases/100 000 inhabitants), Montenegro (207) Luxembourg (196), Bosnia (98), Serbia (71), Romania (52) and Bulgaria (46). The trend is in contrast to the decline in other countries, with a significant impact : Armenia (197 cases per 100 000 inhabitants), Kazakhstan (128), Moldova (82), Russia (60) and Sweden (46).

"The recent outbreak of cases of Covid-19 in some countries after the relaxation of the measures of distancing is certainly a cause for concern," said a spokesman for the WHO Europe. "We need to stay reactive and lift the restrictions carefully. Where new outbreaks occur, they must be controlled with early interventions and targeted, including rapid case detection, isolation, tracing and quarantines," said the WHO.
