The UN's warning about an alarming decline in vaccination rates of children in the world

The pandemic has had a significant impact on the vaccination campaigns in the world, warned Thursday, two UN agencies.

The number of children immunized in the world, which was stagnating already since 10 years, has declined alarmingly due to the pandemic of Covid-19, warned Thursday, two UN agencies. Before the onset of coronavirus in late 2019, the vaccination rates of DTP3 (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) and measles stagnated already at 85%, with 14 million unvaccinated children per year, mostly in Africa, reminiscent of the WHO (world Health Organization) and Unicef (united Nations Fund for children).

The pandemic has had an impact on vaccination campaigns in the three-quarters of 82 countries, according to an online survey conducted in June by these two agencies and the Alliance for vaccine (Gavi). The report is particularly concerned about the decline of vaccination DTP3 in the first four months of the year, in particular because of transportation difficulties, restrictions caused by a pandemic or the fear of contamination.

At least thirty of vaccination campaigns against measles are threatened throughout the world, also point to the agencies. "Vaccines are one of the most powerful tools in the history of health, and more children than ever are now immune," said in the press release the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"But the pandemic threat this progress", he stressed, calling on the country to ensure the continuation of their immunization policy. "The Covid-19 has transformed what was once routine vaccination in a challenge worrying," said for his part, the Unicef executive director Henrietta Fore. "We need to take the vaccination programmes an urgent basis before the lives of children is not threatened by other diseases. We cannot exchange a health crisis against another," she said.
