'Man in the maze', Donato Carrisi challenges the viewer: this Time I win

After the debut with The girl in the mist (2017), awarded with the David di Donatello for best new director, Carrisi brings to the screen another of his bestsellers (columbia university press, 2017) sure of being able to surprise even his devoted readers. "Those who have read the novel will be in any way benefited, but also those who read it, will find surprises in this film," explains the writer and director in the behind the scenes video filmed exclusively for the Republic.


Carrisi knows how to hook the reader, which handles well even with images because, as he explained himself, all his books are designed for the screen, because that is the way of writing. And so was it also with the man in The maze : while he wrote it already he thought to Toni Servillo and Dustin Hoffman for the roles of the two protagonists, Bruno Genko and dr. Green. Are them, a detective at the end of life, and a profiler, to give chase to the man who had held segregated the young Samantha, reappeared after fifteen years without even knowing how. In the cast of the film, produced by Gavila with Colorado Film, also Vinicio Marchioni , Caterina Shulha , Filippo Dini , Orlando Five , Carla Cassola , Sergio Grossini , Sergio Leone .


"This character is to have one last chance," explains Servillo , "is a sort of walking dead that he has the possibility, before everything come to an end, to redeem in part its existence by putting himself on the trail of the person responsible for the disappearance of this little girl." For the character of dr. Green, Carrisi has thought of Hoffman: because he wanted a specialist with great experience, who was affectionate but also strict. A key that the actor has used for its interpretation, as she explains in the video, which was filmed on the set: "He wants to explore both the good and the bad because there is not a person totally evil or totally good". And appreciates the work of the author: "Regardless of the fact that his movies or his books to be successful or not," concludes Hoffman, "I believe is a true artist because he always tries to do something that has never been seen before."


For the writer and the director, with the written words or with images of the game is always the same: "Since the days of Agatha Christie, the public wants to guess the final, this is the great challenge that there is between the author and the viewer. But I am convinced that this time the audience would sense the ending of a thriller before the conclusion," adds Carrisi, "I am convinced that this time I win".
