– People can be very afraid of me

Several of the participants in the NRK tv-series "don't ask about it" have experienced, to scare the other with the word "schizophrenia".

– The worst and most stressful fordommen people have against the schizophrenic is that we are malicious and violent, " says Vincent Desmules Stuestøl.

He has lived with schizophrenia for 16 years, and believe people become afraid because they do not know.

– We do not have a greater chance of damage other than the healthy people have, " he says.

WANT to SHARE:– I felt that the people withdrew, at the same time as I had a need to tell, " Vincent says.

This fear of schizophrenia makes that the community is more dangerous for people with this diagnosis than it is for others, believe psykologspesialist Pål Grøndahl.

– It can lead to depression, stress, increased use of drugs and generally worse health, the so-called minoritetsstress.

– a Lot of movies and bad krimserier presents schizophrenia completely wrong. The bad krimmen provides a vague idea that all seriemordere is psychotic, or has a psychopathic personality disorder, explains Grøndahl, who has written a book about killing and stereotypes in psychiatry.

He explains that there is a misconception that people with schizophrenia are more dangerous than the rest of the population.

– People with schizophrenia are in fact more prone to violence than the fact that they expose others to violence, " he says.

Works well in the community

Schizophrenia is a serious diagnosis. It can lead to psychotic symptoms, where one can see, think and feel things that are not really.

– I can get grandiose ideas about who I am. That I am Messiah, the King or Napoleon, " Vincent says.

– In an ongoing psychosis living in a different world, and this can be scary for others, " says Svenn Torgersen, professor of clinical psychology at the University of Oslo.

He points out that schizophrenia encompasses a wide range of disabilities.

– They can at times be bizarre performances, but apart from that they can work in the garden, in the woods, at the office or whatever, " he explains.

Can be totally healthy

– About one to two per cent of us expected to get schizophrenia. We estimate that approximately 50-100, 000 people in the Uk live with this all the time, " explains Torgersen.

Previously, schizophrenia has been perceived as a livstidssykdom, but recent research shows that it is possible to be completely healthy.

– I have a daughter. I'm married. I have a job. I hope people can meet us with open eyes and get to know us as different people, " Vincent says.
