Freed From Desire: How the song became the Blues anthem

FREED FROM DESIRE. With each of France's victories at the 2022 World Cup, Gala's song thrilled the Blues like their supporters.

In Qatar, have the reigning World Champions found their new anthem? Since their victory against Denmark (2-1), hoisting them to the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, the Blues have not stopped celebrating in the locker room on a song already well known to sports fans... Freed from desire, the hit of the Italian-American singer Gala. A tube that resonated even in the streets of France, where supporters of all ages took up the words of this title in chorus, emerged from the closet.

For Freed from Desire at the World Cup in Qatar, the craze started with a viral video on social networks: in the locker room, we discovered then the Blues, unleashed, dancing on the song of Gala to celebrate their victory on the Denmark, then against Poland, a match which will have earned them a qualification for the quarter-finals of the World Cup, against England.

The enthusiasm around Freed from Desire is such that its popularity in France has reached the ears of Gala, its interpreter. On her Instagram account, the singer even reacted and praised the tribute of Didier Deschamps' team: "France holds a special place in my heart, because the French have always shown a lot of love, not only to my song, but also to me as an artist."

So much so that the singer explained to the Parisian to be ready to sing in Doha: "I was not asked but yes. I did it at the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia in 2014 because I think the "you can send messages through a t-shirt or a statement on stage about women or human rights for example. It's always better than not coming. And I'm not Beyoncé, if I'm not coming, nobody cares!"

It was in 1997 that the Italian singer Gala released the song Freed from Desire. Cut for clubs, the tube will immediately resonate around the world. For 25 years, the song has been constantly taken up at sporting events, such as during this 2022 World Cup.

We won't do you the offense of translating the unforgettable "Na-na-na-na-na, na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na" from the chorus of the song Freed from Desire. But as Gala herself explains, her hit is above all a hymn to tolerance and freedom. "People just want more and more freedom and love (...) Purified mind and senses (...) Freed from desire," Gala sings in the song. Ironic that Freed from Desire becomes Qatar's World Cup anthem, much criticized on human rights?
