Masters 1000 Madrid: Monfils swept away in the 1st round, live scores and results

The Masters 1000 in Madrid takes place from April 24 to May 5, 2024. Carlos Alcaraz, double title holder, could make a historic hat-trick.

The second Masters 1000 of the season begins this Wednesday April 24 in Madrid, with numerous matches on the program. With a field of 96 participants for both men and women, forty matches are played during this first day of competition. Without Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner regains the number one seed among the men, but will have to face for the title the two strong men of this start of the clay season, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, as well as Carlos Alcaraz in search of a historic treble in the Spanish capital. Among the women, the title could be played out between Iga Swiatek, almost unbeatable on clay but who has never won the Master 1000 in Madrid, Aryna Sabalenka, who is trying to win the tournament a third time in four years, and Elena Rybakina. World number four is in great form at the moment, and just beat Swiatek in Stuttgart last week.

Gaël Monfils did not see the light of day for his entry into the running, next to his tennis, he made a lot of direct errors on the forehand against the Italian Darderi. He lost in two sets 6-4 6-2, with 34 unforced errors. It didn't work out either for Arthur Rinderknech, beaten in three sets by Alexander Shevchenko. Among the women, Emma Raducanu lost sharply from the start against the Argentinian Carle. It's also over for Paula Badosa, eliminated by her compatriot Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Former world number one Naomi Osaka, however, qualified for the second round against Belgian Minnen in sets 6-4 6-1.
