Judo has been, for several editions, one of the flagship sports of the Olympic Games. Present since the Tokyo Games in 1964, judo has awarded 15 gold medals at each Olympics: 7 for women, 7 for men and a mixed team event since the Tokyo Games. National sport in Japan, it is the Land of the Rising Sun which historically dominates the medal table at the Olympic Games, ahead of France and South Korea.

For the French team, judo should be an opportunity to see an increase in the collection of medals. Best judoka in history, Teddy Riner could become the most medalist in history in the event of a sixth medal.
