Normally in case of extreme being overweight is often chosen for a combination of stomach reduction and gastric bypass, in which a portion of the small intestine, where it is turned off. With the new treatment, the banded bypass is being worked on by a combination of a gastric band and a gastric bypass.

The combination of a gastric band and a gastric bypass is used more and more often. What is new is that it is two treatments in one operation at the same time, be able to be carried out. The first procedures using this technique have been made.

According to the MMC, using the new approach, and more weight loss is possible. "If there is a group of patients that we see regularly, that they do not have enough to lose weight and once again gain weight. In the banded bypass may be a solution for this. That's what we're exploring," says Marleen Romeijn, a physician-researcher in obesity surgery.

The new approach is available for patients with a BMI greater than 50. The operation is non-standard: for the time being, it is examined whether the results are indeed better when compared to the regular procedure.
